One of the principal reasons for the difficulty foreign students have in mastering Japanese is the language's extensive use of words that seem similar in meaning, but are used very differently in practice. 外国人向けの日本語教材には、逆に日本人が外国語を使って情報を発信する能力を身につけるために役立つものがたくさんあります。そのことに気付いている人は意外と少ないような気がします。

本書では日本語の単語に英単語訳をつけるだけでなく定義を与えて説明しており、その定義解説文に英文訳がついています。つまり、英英辞典の語義説明と同じ事を日本語に対してやっているということです。

一例を挙げてみましょう。

「きたならしい」（dirty） p242下から引用

いかにも不潔に見える・感じるというときや、よごれているように見える・感じているというとき不快感を表して使います。しかし実際に不潔であるとは限りません。

KITANARASHII indicates that something appears dirty,filthy or unsanitary.This is more subjective than KITANAI;in other words,when a speaker says KITANARASHII,the thing itself may not actually be dirty,however the speaker feels dissatisfaction with it.（この後例文が数例）

英単語について英和辞典だけでなく英英辞典を調べる習慣ができている人は、英作文の際に和英辞典に併せてこの辞書を引くようにしてみるとよいでしょう。一般の辞典の訳語のズレを補ってくれるはずです(将来このような「日本語単語の、英語による定義」を載せた学習用和英辞典が出来れば素晴らしいと思いますが)。

ただ、全体として日本語例文の英訳がちょっと手抜きな感じがするので星を一つ減らしました。

What I like most about this dictionary is that it clearly explains the subtle meanings of two adjectives that seem to mean the same thing an on how to use them in context. Entries are in romaji and japanese. The kanji have furigana written over them to indicate the correct pronunciation. I recommend this dictionary to beginner and intermediate students alike.

Given the large number of similar-yet-frustratingly-different words in Japanese, this kind of concise, example filled book is very welcome. A bit muddled on the difference between iroiro and samazama? Or ureshii and tanoshii? The examples and directions are all in Japanese as well as in English, which is useful to test/help your reading ability as well. It also uses kanji/kana, so you can avoid the childish reliance on romanji. Included also are a few small essays/paragraphs in Japanese as well as a few charts with information about topics in Japanese. These are nice although a bit generic if you've already taken the time to read Japanese at an intermediate level.

However, keep in mind that this is a book designed to help you learn the difference between like words - it shouldn't be thought of as an all-purpose dictionary, as it only lists words that are paired with easily confused synonyms. Use it as a supplement alongside a more thorough, inclusive dictionary.
