Testing and Assessment of Linguistic Constructs

Description:
The decisions made based on a test score have significant consequences for a student's life. Hence, there is a growing need for students to understand how assessment works. The first half of this lecture will cover the foundational principles of language assessment, fostering an understanding of the ideas behind test development and score interpretation. Subsequent topics will include dichotomously-scored tests and performance-based assessments, such as presentations or essays.

In the second half of the lecture, the instructor will go over a study that examined the development of listening automaticity in high school students. How do we assess listening automaticity? What kind of practice do we need to achieve it? Answering these two questions will be the focus of this part of the lecture.

Throughout the lecture, participants will engage in hands-on test analysis and interpretation as well as experience firsthand some of the tasks used in the listening automaticity study. This lecture will be of particular benefit to language learners, teachers, and anyone involved in language testing. No previous familiarity with assessment is necessary for participants.
