ETJ East Tokyo:

Finding Better Ways for ALTs and HRTs/JTEs to Work Together

Date: Sunday, August 23rd, 2026 Time: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Speaker: Tomoko Kikuchi

Description:
According to a MEXT survey, students' motivation to learn English tends to decline as they progress through elementary school. One possible reason, suggested by MEXT is that some students struggle to understand what the ALT is saying.

To explore ALTs perceptions of collaborative lesson planning and pre-lesson discussions with HRTs /JTEs, and the extent to which ALTs associate collaboration with more effective teaching, the presenter conducted a survey of ALTs. This session will first examine the survey results and highlight key findings. It will then be followed by a sharing of ideas from Anthony Disorbo, who has developed a wide range of collaborative practices with HRTs, and invite participants to join an open discussion.

Tomoko Kikuchi is an elementary school EFL teacher in Tokyo. She holds an MA of TESOL and applied linguistics from the University of Leicester. Her research interests include materials development, child-centered pedagogy and special needs education.
