Shizuoka JALT:

Self-assessment as a classroom tool

Date: Sunday, April 15th, 2001 Time: 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Speaker: Alan McKenzie

Description:
Self-assessment has generally been treated in one of two ways in the literature: either as a possible replacement for language tests, or as a discrete learning strategy. However, self-assessment's greatest value comes from the development of students' awareness of their learning processes and the information that it can provide the teacher about the learner's beliefs and perceptions of their actions and language ability. In this presentation, I will justify the use of self-assessment in all learning situations, review various techniques which can be adapted to any teaching/learning context. I will also provide opportunities for participants to discuss how self-assessment might enhance awareness of individual learner goals, strategies, and achievements as well as increase opportunities for teacher-student communication.
