Temple University Japan:

TUJ Tokyo Distinguished Lecturer Series: Selection, Acquisition and Testing of L2 Vocabulary: the Old and the New

Date: Saturday, November 7th, 2015 Time: 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Speaker: Batia Laufer (University of Haifa, Israel)

Description:
The seminar will focus on three central themes in L2 vocabulary research: selection, acquisition and testing of words learnt by L2 learners. This lecturer will look at these themes from different perspectives: theory, empirical research and practical implications. Since non-native speakers operate with a limited vocabulary by comparison with native speakers, teachers should make sure that this vocabulary will be as useful as possible and as accurate as possible when functioning in the language. Participants will discuss several criteria for deciding which vocabulary (single words and multi-word units) should be selected for teaching: frequency, usefulness and learnability.

The Temple University Distinguished Lecturer Series brings internationally-recognized TESOL scholars to TUJ for intensive weekend seminars. Each seminar can be taken for elective credit for the master's and doctoral degrees. The first three hours of each Saturday session are free and open to the public. Weekend seminars are free for M.S.Ed. and Ed.D. alumni of Temple University, Japan Campus; the fee for other weekend auditors is 13,000 yen. Please see the TUJ Distinguished Lecturer Series for full details.
