Nagoya and Gifu JALT:

Guiding AI Use in L2 Learning: Reflection from a Case Study

Date: Sunday, June 29th, 2025 Time: 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Speaker: Louise Ohashi (Gakushuin University)

Description:
This session reports on a case study involving a course designed to help raise students' AI literacy and facilitate effective use of AI for a range of L2 learning goals. Data were collected from two 13-week courses held in 2024 at a university in Tokyo. The session will outline key activities set by the teacher and undertaken by students through in-class and out-of-class tasks, with reference to student coursework and teacher reflections. Areas that will be covered include AI ethics, AI exploration (guidance with a range of tools), an AI project (three-week out-of-class project designed by students to meet their learning goals), a reflective report, and discussions/debates.

The study highlights the important role of teachers in guiding AI exploration and reflection, both to minimize inappropriate use by learners and facilitate their learning opportunities. While the findings of this case study are context-specific and not generalizable, it is expected that elements of the course could be adapted for other courses to assist with L2 skill development and foster learner autonomy.
