Yokohama JALT:
The Story of an Accidental Academic in Japan and a Few Things that Were Learned Along the Way
Date: Sunday, June 15th, 2025 Time: 1:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Speaker: Diana Hawley Nagatomo
Description:
Dr. Diane Hawley Nagatomo will talk about her teaching career in Japan, which spans nearly fifty years. She will describe how she got her foot in the door and what she did to develop and sustain her professional identity as a university English teacher and as an academic researcher. Diane's story may be somewhat unique, but it reflects the sociopolitical context of Japan of that time. She will describe the changes that occurred during the eighties, nineties, and into the 21st century and offer tips for those who are thinking of taking their professional development and skills up to the next level to further their own careers in Japanese academia.
Diane Hawley Nagatomo has been living in Japan since 1979 and teaching in Japanese universities since 1984. She is a retired professor from Ochanomizu University and has written numerous academic papers and books, including Exploring Japanese English Teachers' Professional Identity (2012) and Identity, Gender and Teaching English in Japan (2016). Her first of twenty-five EFL textbooks was published in 1993. Always a huge reader, she dreamed of being a novelist, but it wasn't until after retirement that dream came true. Her first novel, The Butterfly Cafe was published in 2023, her second, Finding Naomi, in 2024, and her third, The Making of Us, is due out in September, 2025.
