ETJ East Tokyo:

1) Young Learners' Class with New Teaching Ideas 2) What is Tongatta Class?

Date: Sunday, July 27th, 2025 Time: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM

Speaker: Nicky Sekino (EFL instructor)

Description:
My name is Nicky Sekino, the ETJ East Tokyo coordinator. I'm an EFL instructor who has dedicated much of my career to teaching at trade schools. Recently, I made a shift toward educating young learners--a completely new world for me. At our July workshop, I'll be sharing some of my teaching ideas in this new area (successful ideas and less than successful ideas), and I look forward to hearing your thoughts as well.

Another topic I'd like to explore with you is the idea of a "tongatta" class, a concept drawn from a recent conversation I had with a Japanese businessman. The term tongatta refers to something sharp, unique, and on the cutting edge. We discussed how a "tongatta" business might not appeal to the masses but can attract a focused, serious clientele. That idea resonated with me. It led me to wonder: What would a "tongatta" approach to education look like? What kind of teaching methods would attract motivated and thoughtful students? Let's explore these ideas together in our July meeting. Whether you're teaching young learners or adults, I hope this workshop will offer you fresh insights and an opportunity to connect with fellow educators who are passionate about teaching.
