Bio:
David Paul built up a successful group of schools in Hiroshima, Korea and Thailand and used this success as a platform for supporting the professional development of teachers through ETJ, TESOL certificate programs, MA courses, Expos/conventions, social media, and general teacher training. He is the author of various books including Finding Out, Discussion Skills, Communicate, Motivate and Teaching English to Children in Asia.
Program:
12:30-1:30 Teaching Japanese children effectively through a games-based, child-centered approach
Later this year, David Paul will be publishing a new edition of Finding Out (Finding Out Interactive), his best-selling course for Japanese children. This presentation will introduce the course, but will do it through making general points that will be helpful to teachers using any materials. The focus of Finding Out is on children constructing their understanding of English through anticipation and discovery in engaging games that motivate children to face new challenges with a positive attitude.
1:40-2:30 Building up teenagers' and adults' ability to discuss a wide range of topics
David Paul will introduce his new course, Discussion Skills, and show how it is effective in building up students' ability to discuss a wide range of topics. The course is designed for high school, university and adults. Book 1 is appropriate for lower intermediate students and has topics such as friends, family, the past, work and travel. Book 2 is appropriate for upper intermediate students and has topics such as education, history, women in society, politics and economics. The course is a new edition of Communication Strategies, though it has been changed quite a bit and lots of digital components have been added.
2:40-3:30 Going independent and building up a language school or private students
David Paul started teaching privately in an apartment in Hiroshima and within twelve years was employing 50 full-time staff in Hiroshima and had franchise schools in Korea and Thailand. His school also became a center for the professional development of teachers in East Asia. This presentation will look at how this was possible and what lessons there are to learn that would be helpful for teachers trying to build up a school or private students.
