Gunma JALT:

[Hybrid] Syllabus Development with Action Research in an English Writing Class

Date: Sunday, March 15th, 2026 Time: 2:00 PM - 4:30 PM

Speaker: Luke Winn (Hakuoh University)

Description:
In this session, Luke Winn will introduce an Action Research (AR) project which began in April 2023. The purpose of the project was to develop the syllabus and pedagogical practices in an English writing class (Writing 2) at Hakuoh University in Tochigi prefecture. First, he will give a brief primer on AR methodology, before moving on to an outline of the project itself. After that, he will describe how the AR process was initiated and how that process produced insights into students' learning needs, which in turn informed the first few stages of an action plan for syllabus development. Finally, he will offer a critical reflection of the impact that the AR process has had on the course, and hopes to have a discussion with attendees about further avenues for possible inquiry.

Luke Winn teaches English at Hakuoh University in Tochigi Prefecture. His main interest is the application of action research in language teaching, both for the purpose of meeting students' localized needs, and as a professional development tool for teachers.
