ETJ East Tokyo:
Intuitive Ways to Teach Pronunciation
Date: Sunday, May 31st, 2026 Time: 2:00 PM - 4:00 PM
Speaker: Stacy Clause (Takasaki University)
Description:
This workshop is designed for teachers working in small-group or conversation-based classes who feel stuck in a grammar- and vocabulary-focused routine. First, we will explore approaches to teaching pronunciation through a "show, don't tell" method--using simple props to make sounds and sentence patterns more visible and easier for students to understand.
Then, we will discuss ways to incorporate figurative language features such as onomatopoeia, personification, and metaphor--elements that students do not often have the chance to explore, but which can spark curiosity about cultural differences in language.
This is a collaborative session where we will try activities together and share ideas.
Stacy Clause is a lecturer in the Department of Child Education at Takasaki University of Health and Welfare in Takasaki, Gunma.
