Kitakyushu JALT:

Two-Part Presentation: Peer Modelling and Willingness to Communicate; Using AI Image Tasks: A Hands-on Workshop

Date: Saturday, May 9th, 2026 Time: 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM

Speaker: Charlie Bell (University of Occupational and Environmental Health)

Description:
Part 1: Peer Modelling and Willingness to Communicate

This study explores whether short near-peer role model videos can increase learners' willingness to communicate (WTC) during task-based discussion activities. Drawing on classroom data from Japanese university students, results show a small but consistent increase in WTC following video exposure, suggesting that simple pre-task modelling can meaningfully influence participation.

Part 2: Using AI Image Tasks: A Hands-on Workshop

Participants will experience and evaluate a ready-to-use classroom task with AI-supported output. You will complete the task from a student perspective, reflect on its impact, and consider how to adapt it for your own teaching context.

What to bring:

  • A smartphone (with camera)
  • A Google (Gemini) account (free, recommended for image generation)
  • A pen
