Description:
The East Shikoku JALT Chapter is very fortunate to have the unique opportunity of a presentation by such a distinguished international expert in pronunciation. John Wells is Professor of Phonetics in the University of London and former Head of the Department of Phonetics and Linguistics at University College London. Formerly Secretary of the International Phonetic Association and Editor of its Journal, in 2003 he was elected as its President. His interests centre on the phonetic and phonological description of languages but also extend to lexicography and language teaching. He directs UCL's annual Summer Course in English Phonetics. He is a frequent contributor to BBC radio (R2, R4, R5, BBC English). He has also published in and on Welsh and Esperanto (he is a former President of the World Esperanto Association). Based in Britain at UCL throughout his career, he has over the years given invited lectures in many countries around the world.
