ETJ Oita:

3rd ETJ-Oita Meeting

Date: Sunday, October 30th, 2005 Time: 3:00 PM - 5:00 PM

Speaker: Simon Weedon, Oliver Kavanagh

Description:
There will be two presentations followed by workshop and discussion. The first presentation is Teaching Reading Skills to Young Learners, by Simon Weedon. The second presentation is Teaching Sentence-Level Pronunciation, by Oliver Kavanagh.

Teaching Sentence Level pronunciation (Simon Weedon)
A lot of pronunciation focus in the classroom looks at isolating words to achieve correct pronunciation, however, this approach can still lead to learners sounding stilted or unnatural in longer periods of speech. The presentation will look at teaching how sounds change at sentence level, considering how to teach sentence stress (normal and emphatic), weak forms, blends, elision and intonation.

Teaching Reading Skills to Young Learners (Oliver Kavanagh)
The presentation will look at a variety of ways to teach reading skills. The focus will be on activities that build reading skills quickly, and that are of use with all ages.
