Tokyo Chapter of FEW:

FEW December Monthly Meeting: Bonenkai

Date: Thursday, December 12th, 2002 Time: 6:30 PM - 9:00 PM

Speaker: Exhibiting Artist: Carol Van Zandt

Description:
FEW Members and guests, male spouses and friends welcome! The annual bonenkai is one of FEW's most looked forward to events. Not only is it a rare opportunity to bring along the man or men in your life and satiate their curiosity about the inner workings of FEW, it is also a chance to get into the spirit of the holidays and make a donation to FEW's favorite charities, HELP and SAYA SAYA. This year, the beautiful artwork of Carol Van Zandt will be featured. Currently a resident of Tokyo, Carol Van Zandt has worked as a sculptor and a painter for more than 24 years. After majoring in Studio Art at Boston College, Carol carried out graduate work and further studies at Massachusetts College of Art, Rhode Island School of Design, Haystack School of Arts and Crafts, Danforth Museum, Radcliffe Pottery Studio, Kaji Aso Studios in Boston and Nihon Shodo Kenkyu Kai with Morita Gafu Sensei. Most recently and most important to this body of work, she has spent the last three years studying under Ilan Yanizky at the Ilan Yanizky Studio in Yoyogi Uehara. She has had numerous solo and group shows over the years both in America and more recently in Japan, as well as being the Tokyo organizer of Transcultural Exchange's 'The Coaster Project'. Carol's recent shows at Roti in Roppongi in September 2002 and Las Chicas in Jingumae in the month of November 2002 launched her new series of contemporary calligraphy and sumi-e painting. Though Carol began studying Japanese calligraphy 4 years ago in America, it is after continuing learning under the tutelage of calligraphy masters in Tokyo, that she found her own style. Her work is now a melding of her western training and Asian influenced imagery. Carol uses traditional Japanese techniques but by adding her own creativity and personality she has produced a body of work that is "a little bold, a little delicate, a little Zen, and sometimes a little neon." At the December Bonenkai, Carol will be displaying some of her new color pigment paintings on washi with abstract Japanese calligraphy, some black and white sumi-e paintings and some abstract western style water-based mixed media paintings. Carol will also bring along some small items that can serve as holiday gifts or omiyagi.
