Neuroscience and Psychology for TEFL

The Harvard Graduate School of Education focuses on connecting the mind, brain, and education (MBE). It is an exciting, highly relevant field of study for educators. Robert Murphy, a Harvard MBE Institute certificate recipient, will introduce a few of the major points of Harvard's MBE research and make them relevant for EFL teachers in Japan. To accomplish this, he shall synthesize those MBE points with his own research on the cognitive development of Japanese students in Japan and shall discuss the pedagogical implications of the research. The presentation will top off with the unveiling of CREAME, a practical EFL methodology based on the findings of his research.
Topics covered: Fischer's skill theory, Perkins' Teaching for Understanding, Differentiated Instruction, Multiple Intelligences, Tri-elemental model of language acquisition, and CREAME methodology.
Robert Murphy has been selected to be a Teaching Coach for Harvard Graduate School of Education's online WIDE World program. He is a university instructor, language school owner and local TV/radio personality. He has been living in Japan for over 23 years. He graduated from the University of Birmingham with a Masters in TESL/TEFL and is a PhD candidate at Utrecht University researching the cognitive development of Japanese students and neuroscience-based EFL methodology.
