The Future of English Education in Junior and Senior High School: Which Way Forward?

This panel discussion will consider the changing status of English education at the junior high and senior high levels. It will look at the pressures of the examination system on curriculum, the role of JETs and ALTS and the effects of the new elementary school reforms in international education.
Dr. Takahiro Hattori, PhD, was born in Japan, but raised in the United States. After graduating from Keio University (B.A.), he continued his advanced studied in intercultural communication and English language education. He received his Graduate Course Diploma in English Linguistics from Waseda University, an M.A. in Education from Joetsu University of Education, and his Ph.D. in English from The Union Institute & University. Currently he is a professor of foreign studies at Otsuma Women's University, a lecturer at Waseda University, and a visiting professor at Murray State University in Murray, Kentucky USA. Dr. Hattori has published over 80 academic papers and made presentations at various conferences both in Japan and North America. He is the past president of the Language and Culture Association, a lecturer of the NHK English language education program and a 1st Grade Interview Test Examiner of the Society for Testing English Proficiency (STEP). Dr. Hattori is an author, co-author, and supervisor of over 90 books in the fields of English language education and international understanding. Among them are the authorized Ministry of Education junior high school English textbook series New Horizon. He has also supervised over 80 language learning tapes and videos. He gives numerous lectures every year on English language education and international understanding to teachers both in Japan and the US.
