As one of many pathways to bilingualism, language immersion education continues to proliferate throughout the world. Schools play an increasingly important role in providing bi- and multilingual skills to students around the world and, although a bit slow in coming, interest in immersion and bilingual education in Japan has increased dramatically in recent ears. However, immersion and bilingual education are multifaceted and exceedingly complex.

The opening presentation on Saturday will briefly describe the first English immersion program in Japan with particular focus on the challenges of implementing an immersion program in a Japanese context. Research that has been conducted at the school will be shared as well as a discussion of what has been learned over the past 14 years since the start of the program in 1992.

This seminar is part of TUJ's Distinguished Lecturer Series. Note that each seminar is actually 2 days long, apx. 7 hours per day. The first three hours of each seminar are free and open to the public. To attend both days of the weekend seminar costs 12,000 yen for the general public (free for M.Ed. and Ed.D. alumni of Temple University Japan). Please see the TUJ Tokyo web site for full details.
