Nobody's Assistant: Flying solo in a high school classroom

Description:
Les Smith of Tomita High School in Gifu is one of a handful of native English educators in Japanese K12 schools permitted to develop his own curriculum. In this workshop, Les will discuss the challenges of melding standardized testing expectations with communicative goals and will take us through a sample lesson to demonstrate his ideology concerning English education at the high school level.

Participants will be better able to comprehend what the challenges and rewards are of teaching EFL to high school students. Additional critique of current public school methodology and what we can do about it will follow the workshop.
