(1) Maximizing learner involvement in the language classroom; (2) Activities for Halloween

    Speaker: Andy Boon
    Date: Sunday, September 21st, 2008
    Time: 1:00 PM - 5:00 PM
    Location: Tokyo
Venue: Musashino City, Sakai 2-3-7, Musashino Shiminkaikan, Dai 1 Kouza shitsu (second floor) map
Description: Maximising learner involvement in the language classroom
Everyday in our classes we teachers are faced with varying degrees of learner attention versus learner distraction, learner activity versus learner passivity, learner effort investment versus learner effort withdrawal, and learner persistence versus learner abandonment. Thus, how do we utilize the classroom dynamic to maximise learning opportunities for all concerned? How do we establish an environment and experience that can spark students' natural curiosity and eagerness to develop? How do we help nurture and sustain learner interest and involvement throughout the lesson? In this workshop, Andy Boon demonstrates a number of activities that strive to maximise learner involvement in the language classroom and generate learner motivation to complete the task at hand. Participants will also be encouraged to share their own motivational strategies and classroom experiences.

Biographical data: Andy Boon is currently teaching at Toyo Gakuen University, Chiba, and is the program chair for JALT West Tokyo chapter. He completed a masters degree at Aston University in 2004. His research interests focus on teacher development and action research.
