West Tokyo JALT:

Three Presentations on Online Educational Tools and Resources

Date: Sunday, September 20th, 2015 Time: 1:30 PM - 5:00 PM

Speaker: Jason LaGreca (Instructure; the creator of Canvas)

Description:
Today's event features three presentations on online educational tools and resources.

  1. Online Education and Open Education Resources for English Language Learning
In this session, the speaker will give a brief overview of current trends in online education. This will include tips and examples of how educators the world over are flipping the language and communication classroom. Most importantly, this session will look at a range of free online open education resources and how these can be used to augment English learning and teaching. The speaker will discuss how to use a variety of online tools to provide students with authentic English speaking and listening experiences, both inside and outside of the classroom, at any time, on any device.
  2. Analytics for Learning and Teaching
In this presentation, the presenter will look at how online learning analytics can help identify and improve learning outcomes for students. This presentation will look as the most commonly used metrics for measuring engagement with online resources and show the most recent trends in presenting this data to administrators, teachers and students online. The speaker will then delve into the wonderful world of data visualisation -- specifically, graphical snapshots of real student data that help answer important questions about student learning. Most importantly, the speaker will show participants how easy it is to get started in big data and learning analytics. Finally the speaker will look at how data visualization can be used to construct and enhance research projects on the language classroom.
  3. 25 Strategies for Augmenting your Communicative English Teaching with Online Tools
A machine gun approach to integrating educational technology into your day-to-day communicative English teaching. Drawing from both personal teaching stories and the experiences of teachers globally, the presenter will show participants 25 new ways to encourage learners with free (or mostly free) tools and ideas. Each strategy will be tied to specific examples for the communicative English classroom. The speaker will demonstrate the use of formative online assessments, video conferencing, group work, teacher-student and student-student video-based collaboration as well as best practices for building authentic learning experiences in the online English communication classroom.
